Performs daily pre-and post-trip vehicle inspections and maintains accurate vehicle log. Courteously conveys basic information to the public when approached with questions. Trains new and existing equipment operators in use of all equipment. In absence of supervisor, provides guidance and direction to subordinate staff. Job DutiesEssential Functions Essential Functions % of TimeOperate Solid Waste Heavy Equipment: Operate all Solid Waste equipment (e.g., Automated Side-Loader (ASL), Automated Leaf Vacuum Truck (ALV), Rear Loader, Clam Truck, Flatbed Truck, Roll-Off Truck, Street Sweeper, etc.) in a relief capacity to collect and transport solid waste and/ or recycling materials to a transfer station, material recovery facility, or landfill for disposal or processing on a daily basis. According to daily needs of the division, may drive any route. Operate equipment with moving maneuverable parts in high traffic areas and around stationary objects. In performance of assigned tasks, proficiently utilize joysticks and levers to control multiple moving truck parts to include robotic/mechanical arms with claw/grabber, boom/suction hose, or boom/crane telescopic extension. Assist with after-hours special events waste collection including manual collections not associated with regular routes. During inclement weather, operate snow and ice removal equipment as needed. Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner providing information within the area of assignment including explaining collection procedures. Facilitate the resolution of complaints/concerns in a timely and efficient manner. Complete and submit records of the number of daily pick-ups, tonnage of loads, fuel usage, odometer readings, minor costs, and other records associated with solid waste refuse collections. Ensure equipment is properly fueled, lubricants are at appropriate levels, and tires are properly inflated. Wash equipment daily and clean cab area at least once a week.80%Perform and Comply with Safety Measures: Perform daily pre-and post-trip vehicle inspections and maintain accurate vehicle log. Inspect equipment prior to and after use in order to identify needed maintenance and report needs to supervisor or Fleet Division. Observe and listen to equipment during use to identify malfunctions or parts in need of replacement. When necessary, shut down equipment to prevent further damage or hazards. Utilize proper body mechanics and ergonomics in performance of work. Use operating skills, learned safe practices and awareness of the surrounding area to avoid injury or damage to persons or property. Utilize spotters, flaggers or helpers as needed to maintain a safe working environment. When potentially unsafe conditions are observed make efforts to avoid or correct and notify responsible supervisor or safety representative in a timely manner.10%Train & Supervise Staff in Operation of Equipment: Train new or existing equipment operators in the use of all equipment. In absence of supervisor, as directed provide guidance and direction to subordinate staff; schedule and assign work; and check work in progress and upon completion. QualificationsJob RequirementsHigh school diploma or equivalent.Over two (2) years of experience driving and operating solid waste collection, right- and left-side drive vehicles (e.g., ASL, ALV, Clam Truck, etc.).Must obtain FEMA ICS 100, 700 and 552 within three (3) months of hire.Driver's License RequirementsValid South Carolina Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake provision, or the equivalent CDL from their state of residence.Please be advised: Applicants who do not intend to relocate to South Carolina, must reside in a neighboring State (Georgia or North Carolina) and must meet the same CDL requirements as residents of South Carolina. In addition, employees residing in a neighboring state are required to provide to the City of Greenville an annual Motor Vehicle Record from their state's Department of Motor Vehicles at the sole cost of the employee.Performance RequirementsKnowledge of:The safe operation of commercial vehicles and heavy equipment, including complete familiarization with there systems and safety features.Traffic rules, regulations, and laws and procedures for the safe operation of commercial vehicles and heavy equipment.Geography and roadways of an assigned route(s).Ability to:Operate commercial vehicles and heavy equipment safely.Operate vehicle two-way radio system, and specialized on-board equipment.Operate and/or utilize all standard safety equipment installed in/on vehicles and equipment, including safety harnesses, restraints, fire extinguishers, and any other equipment required by federal, state, or local regulations.Conduct and document pre- and post-trip inspections.Properly climb up and down to enter and exit vehicle frequently throughout the day.Perform traffic flagging and understand signs and procedures.Operate joystick or button control systems.Read and understand maps and schedules, follow rules and regulations, vehicle operating procedures, vehicle laws, and written and oral instructions.Maintain effective working relationships and deal courteously and effectively with the public, fellow employees, and supervisors.Be able to work without immediate supervision in the field and thoroughly complete all assignments.In absence of supervisor, provide guidance and direction to subordinate staff.Train new or existing equipment operators in the use of all equipment.Report accidents, injuries, and incidents immediately.Maintain simple records and make basic mathematical calculations.Be punctual and maintain regular, predictable attendance.Be available to work a flexible schedule that includes nights, weekends, holidays, and a reasonable amount of overtime.Work in inclement weather conditions including cold rain, wind, heat, snow, sleet, etc.Other InformationWorking ConditionsPrimary Work Location: Vehicle and outdoors.Protective Equipment Required: Steel-toed shoes, gloves (optional), safety vest, hardhat, and safety glasses.Environmental/Health and Safety Factors: Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards with the majority of work performed outside or with exposure to risk.
